There are so many things around us that one finds it hard to have a special preference for a few particular things. I, however, take a special interest in motor-car and television.

Motor-cars have always fascinated me. Since my childhood I have been traveling in motor-cars, and I have visited hundreds of places in this country. I have been to remote villages and almost all the towns, large and small. Travel has broadened my outlook on life. I have met various types of people, and my knowledge of the people and places of this country has increased greatly. If I am at home or if I am walking along a road, I feel the urge to travel as soon as I see a car.

It is because of motor-cars that I am able to do various types of work. In the morning I go to my school, a long distance away, in my father’s car. After school I go to my father’s plantation to help him in his work. Then I visit one of my classmates and discuss our school work. Sometimes I visit the cinema, miles away. If there were no motor-cars, I would not have seen so much. Even in this small country, I would perhaps not have been able even to attend school.

The next thing that I like is television. Television helps us to watch and listen some of the famous leaders of the world. We are also able to see some of the great events of the day. In addition, we can get news from all parts of the world, and listen to songs and music. Sometimes there are special programs which are very amusing. The television programs become more interesting on a rainy day. We can then sit in the comfort of our home and watch the television program. Even if we cannot read the newspaper for some reason, television keeps us well informed about the latest developments in the world. In this respect, television is better than the radio because the pictures and incidents shown on television convey a better impression than only the spoken words of the radio.

I shall therefore always have a special preference for the motor-car and television.

Why should we have good manners?

Good manners are important to live happily among people. Without good manners we are only slightly better than animals.

The modern society consists of more people than it did in the past. These people are of various cultural, racial, religious and professional backgrounds. It therefore requires great powers of endurance and abilities of mixing with people. Good manners enable one to tolerate the disagreeable attitudes of others to a great extent. They also help to promote friendship among the people around.

If one has good manners, that person is respected by those who associate with him or her. Having good manners, however, does not mean that being polite, understanding, and sympathetic when not only outside but also inside his or her home. There are many people who are very kind and polite to people outside their homes, but within their own homes they are worse than the devil himself. Such people do not really have good manners.

Having good manners means being good to others. Our speech and habits as well as our behavior should not hurt the feelings of others or cause them any inconvenience. We should not also talk ill about others or boast about our achievements or personal possessions. We must not laugh at the weaknesses and failures of others. Further, if we are angry we must try to use words in such a way that others are not offended.

If we have all these qualities, we will have more friends and well-wishers. We will also have less trouble from others, and those who associate with us will also learn how to behave well. In this way, our good manners will help to spread better understanding and good-will among others. Thus, we can live a happier life. It is for all these reasons that we should have good manners.

Talk about good manners
Good manners play an important part in maintaining peace and good-wiling in a community. A man who has good manners does not hurt the feelings of others, and therefore he is on good terms with his friends and neighbors and also with others. In this way he helps to keep peace in society.

But a man whose manners are bad has no respect for others. He uses words carelessly and behaves rudely towards other and causes a lot of ill-will and unpleasantness. In the end, it is he himself who suffers the most. Everyone avoids him and he is forced to live almost in isolation.

To live well in a society, money alone is not enough. We should also have good manners, for it is human nature to seek friendship; and friendship cannot be bought with money. Friendship with others makes life pleasant and it has to be earned through our own attitude towards others. If we are kind to others, they will be kind to us, and kindness is the essence of good manners. Bad manners not only drive away friends but also others, including our own family members.

Even the richest man cannot afford to have had manners. For a man may have enough money to buy all things than he wants; but if his manners are bad he will have no friends, and no one can live happily without friends. Even the members of his own family may not respect him and finally he will become a lonely man.

On the other hand, a man whose manners are good has many friends. He commands the respect of all those who come into contact with him. He does not talk ill about others. Even when he is provoked, he tries his best to use words in a way which will not offend others. He is also sympathetic towards the weak and ignorant and does not poke fun at the deformities and weaknesses of others.

There are, however, many people who behave so well outside their homes that they are respected and admired by everyone outside. But in their own homes they are worse than the devil. Such people could not be said to have good manners. Their whole behavior is a pretence and it does not take long for others to discover this.

If one’s manners are good, one behaves well everywhere, even when one is away from the critical eyes of others. Only such a person can live well in society. It is therefore essential for everyone to cultivate good manners.

How do Hearing-Impaired people talk? Discuss.

Sound can not be recognized by hearing-impaired people. For this reason, the question is that how they hear “words” and in which way they can communicate.

They use American Sign Language (ASL). They communicate with hands. In this way, two hearing-impaired can talk with each other. They both use ASL. A normal person who can hear sometimes can interpret what other people say into ASL so that hearing-impaired can get the information. The person listens to other and then uses his or her hands to give the information to make hearing-impaired understand.

There are two types of sign language. The first one is referred to hand signs for every letter in the alphabet. Every letter in a word is spelled one to another. In other words, they spell words. This is finger-spelling type. The second one consists of signs for full words. There are about five thousand words of this type. They are used for actions, things and ideas.

Some of the signs are very easy such as “eat”, “milk” and “home”. You can easily get their meanings. Some other words, however, are more difficult, for examples “star”, “egg” or “week”.

Anyone from any country can learn ASL. If they can not speak, pronounce or spell words, they use these signs – not finger-spelling words; therefore, they can understand people from other countries.

ASL is almost like a dance. Every part of body works. ASL is an interesting language.

Stories of men are full of heroic deeds. One of the acts of heroism that I have seen myself was that of my uncle, who was attacked by a huge tiger while we were once in our plantation.

My uncle, a young and well-built man, and I left our home early in the morning to do business in the plantation. When we reached there, we could hear some dogs barking from the distance. We, however, did not suspect anything. As usual, we began to do our work.

While we were working, we noticed some foot-prints of an animal. We then examined them closely and were satisfied that they did not belong to any member of the cat family, the most ferocious of animals. We then resumed our work. My uncle took a long knife and began to cut some sticks and branches of plants scattered throughout the plantation, while I did some other work.

Soon, however, I saw a movement in the bush at a short distance away. I was alarmed. I ran up to my uncle to draw this attention, but he was hardly interested in what I said. He kept on working. Shortly afterwards, my uncle himself observed the movement in the bush. Yet, he showed no signs of fear, and his composure dispelled my anxieties. He warned me to be careful, and picked up an axe that had been lying on the ground. He gave his knife to me. He moved slowly and cautiously towards the bush, ready for any attack.

To our horror, a huge tiger soon emerged from the bush. My uncle was prepared to face it, to escape seemed impossible. The tiger too seemed to be fully aware of the strength and courage of its adversary. It paused several times while advancing towards my uncle. Then, all of a sudden, it sprang on my uncle, but his agility enabled him to escape the sharp claws of the brute with the slightest injury. Now with the axe still in his firm grip, my uncle struck the tigers face again and again, until it was bleeding profusely. The length of the handle of the axe made it difficult for the tiger to get too close to my uncle. That the tiger was at a disadvantage was clear to me from the beginning.

In the end, however, the tiger collapsed and died. Within hours, after that all the people in our area heard of my uncle’s bravery, which saved both of us from death. It was indeed a greatest act of heroism that I had witnessed.

Smoking cigarettes is really an expensive habit. The average price per pack of cigarettes, for example, is just about one dollar, people who smoke two packs of cigarettes a day therefore spend $2 per day on their habit. At the end of one year these smokers incur a debt. Since cigarette smoking has an offensive odor that permeates clothing stuffed furniture and carpets, smokers often find that they must have these items cleaned more frequently than nonsmokers do. Further more, a smoker would pay a large sum of money for some diseases coming from smoking. Although it is difficult to sum the cost of these additional expenses, we can say that the expenses do contribute to making smoking become an expensive habit.

We cannot be friendly with all the people whom we came to meet. We hate some people for good reasons. The person I hate most is Jake, who lives a few blocks away from my flat. He is a boy of twenty and a terror in my neighborhood. He is a bully, a pickpocket and an extortioner. He was arrested by the police several times and still he is incorrigible. The boy has grown up in the streets, for his parents had died when he was only five years old.

Once he was arrested for being a vagrant and kept in the welfare home for some time. On another occasion he picked a man’s pocket and was jailed for six months. He demands money from youngsters like me and if we refuse he would threaten us with a knife.

I am terribly afraid of this bully. I am sure, one day he will land up in prison with a longer sentence. This boy is danger to the society and so I hate him. I hope everyone will agree with me.

I have two close friends, Tom and Peter. They are twins but they are very different in their hobbies.

Tom likes to read true stories and books on real life. He likes to watch the news, late movies and special programs on weekends. He does not like to play any outdoor sports, event though he does not miss a single minute of sports news on television. Instead, he prefers indoor games such as ping pong and some other electronic games. In contrast to Tom, Peter likes to read science fiction stories and mystery ones. He enjoys making battle-ships, carriers and freighters in cardboard. In addition, he likes to design things. Whereas Tom likes to play indoor games, Peter likes to play football and swimming.

I guess that you could say Tom is more of an intellectual and realistic, whereas Peter is more adventurous.

Tell about your hobby in free time.

My hobby is stamp colleting. When I was still only a baby, my mother began to collect for me. Of course, she did not let me touch the stamps until I was old enough not to spoil them. I remember that it was on my fifteenth birthday that she first put them into my hands. They were in four fat books, but since that time I have added three more, so that now I have a bigger collection than any of my friends.

How do I get my stamps? I have never bought a single one from a shop — so my collection has really cost me nothing. My father, who works in a big office, sometimes brings me home stamps from many countries of the world. And I have friends both here and in other lands who send me stamps in return for ones which I send to them.

Now that I am working for my living, I do not have as much time as before to spend on my stamps. But in the evenings, what can be better than to sit down at a table with my precious books, arranging new stamps in them, writing in the names of countries, or, if I am too tired, only looking through the stamps already in the books? Each stamp has a story to tell me of far countries and strange peoples. I see pictures of men and women, birds and animals that I have never seen. Kings and presidents pass before my eyes, and I can follow the history of nations — I can see Hitler’s Germany spreading over Europe and then suddenly breaking into pieces; Pakistan is born before my eyes; countries rise and countries fall – and the whole time I remain comfortably in my armchair at home.

But my stamp collection does not make me think only of the past. Just as my mother collected for me, so I, too, am collecting for my future child. What better way will there be of interesting him in history, geography and languages, and of making these subjects live for him instead of being only things in school books? If I pass my hobby on to him, he will bless me for it as I have blessed my mother for her wise action.

For example, a person who collects stamps of various countries of the world takes a special interest in the study of the subject of the stamp as well as the country where it is used. He may spend a lot of money to buy rare stamps for his album and takes a great pride in owning them. Hobby also teaches a person the value of things or activity he is interested in.

As for me I have had a few hobbies at different stages in my life. My earliest hobby was stamp collecting. Then it was keeping pets. I had two pet dogs and a parrot. Presently my hobby is gardening. I plant flowers and vegetables in my house compound and water them everyday. I nurse the plants by weeding or putting manures at times. Very often I sell my flowers to florists and get a small income.

It s wiser to engage oneself in any hobby than it is idle a way one’s precious time.
